No matter what type of student you are: laid back, straight-A, or anything in between, you’re bound to face stress at some point during the school year (I know I do!). It’s important to learn how to cope with this stress before it begins to affect not only your academic performance, but other areas of your life too.

Take Time For Yourself

As someone who is chronically stressed out, after having discovered this tip, I can really say it does help. Even taking just 15 minutes out of your day to listen to music or do something you enjoy can work wonders.


Personally, getting active once a day, even if it’s only a brief workout, can really help me feel less stressed. Any activity that allows you to exercise can help you to

  1. clear your mind while you’re doing it, and can
  2. help you feel like you’ve accomplished something after you’re done.

These have been two huge benefits for me. If you’re pressed for time, a quick jog after school (15-20 minutes), or even just 10 minutes of stretching before bed can be a great help in de-stressing.


After trying and failing to keep journals for several years-I’ve finally gotten into the habit and have been journaling religiously every night for the past two years- I can say that I really do notice a difference in the way that stress affects me with and without journaling. Keeping a journal and filling it out regularly can help with emotional control. Having a place to write down all your feelings can really help you get to the root of the problem, and can make you put things into perspective. The amount of times I’ve written something down thinking it’s an insurmountable obstacle and then read over my entry and realized that it’s really not that big of a deal is much higher than I’d care to admit, and I’d venture a guess and say I’m probably not alone on that one. One excellent way to journal is to take up bullet journaling, which is not only an organizational tool, but a way to keep track of your feelings as well. Turn Off Your Phone

I know it’s hard, but if you’re feeling stressed out about everything you have to do, your phone can make things so much worse.

  1. Looking at social media and seeing a bunch of people who seem to be accomplishing everything and have their life completely together will just make you feel horrible. When you’re stressed out and you’re feeling kind of down about things, you usually don’t recognize the fact that you’re looking at people’s “highlight reel” on social media, and you may compare yourself to them which is not at all healthy.
  2. Stress has this nasty habit of making us procrastinate. When you’re stressed out and feeling overwhelmed, it becomes a lot easier to let your work fall by the wayside as you play round after round of your go-to game. This will just make you feel less accomplished and your stress will only build up. Seriously, just put your phone away.

Recognize Your Accomplishments

When you’re feeling stressed about everything you need to do, it’s always a good idea to look back on a time when you also felt stressed, but overcame it and accomplished what you set out to do. If you’re having trouble remembering, check in your journal! If you really can’t think of anything, think of one thing you’ve improved about yourself in the past year. Maybe you’ve improved your grades, or made a new friend, or joined a club you were too shy to join before. No matter how big or small, finding something to remind you what you’ve done in the past will help you to get the boost you need to tackle this round of stress.
