Sofia Vavaroutsos (she/her) is a 20 year-old journalist navigating life in Toronto, Canada. Sofia studies at the Ryerson School of Journalism where she is in her third year, and is constantly trying to find new ways to showcase her creativity and share her experiences. Sofia has minors in politics and French, and is trilingual with fluency in English, French and Italian.
Since February 2019, Sofia has worked for Ryerson University’s campus community radio station, CJRU 1280AM, where she is the coordinator and producer of FemRadio, an award winning weekly feminist radio show. Sofia is also a contributor to weekly news show The Scope News, and has worked for the station covering different events, such as the NXNE music festival that took place in Toronto from June 7-16, 2019.
In off-campus media, Sofia is a contributing producer at the Women’s International News Gathering Service, producing radio features which air worldwide on a freelance basis.
In print journalism, Sofia is a regular contributor to Ryerson University’s independent student newspaper, The Eyeopener, writing both feature articles and news stories, published in print and online.
Sofia enjoys volunteering in the community and regularly hosts workshops at local nonprofits to help them grow their online presence through podcasting. She also speaks at campus events and volunteers to help new students adjust to the Ryerson School of Journalism
As far as long-term goals, Sofia hopes to pursue a career in journalism, to continue to travel the world, and to experience as much of what life has to offer as possible- while drinking as much coffee as possible, of course.
